BOOK V: DEATH ROW CHARACTERS
The principal characters of Death Row, a novel set in a maximum security prison cut off from the world after a nuclear holocaust.

NOMI:
Highly trained operative (former OPP) who spends five months alone reconnoitring a sealed maximum-security prison near Bath, Ontario after the Light severs the institutional channel that would have extracted her undercover husband, Clarence McDonald, meeting several unsavory characters along the way.
Infiltrates the facility, reads the abandoned administrative wing like a document, and guided by Roy Elkins through a hidden 1962-era maintenance passage, reaches Clarence in solitary confinement just as a building-wide fungal outbreak reaches its worst point.

Clarence McDonald:
Former JTF2 operative (career-ending knee injury at Dwyer Hill Training Centre), then undercover RCMP operative inside a sealed maximum-security prison near Bath, Ontario when the Light hits and severs the institutional channel that would have extracted him.
His cover: a real, engineered murder conviction, killing a debt collector in a genuine altercation during an unrelated undercover loan-shark operation, which the RCMP let stand rather than intervene in. Recruited by Gaines specifically to document Cobb’s Hells Angels chapter from inside.

Roy Elkins:
Inmate from Hawkesbury, Ontario, serving a 12-year sentence (8 years in) for an armed robbery of a Pembroke, Ontario pharmacy that went wrong. Three years before the novel, Clarence stopped a shower assault on him, a debt Roy has carried since.
Discovered, 14 months into his sentence, a hidden 1962-era maintenance passage bypassing the facility’s one powered, keyed door blocking access to the solitary unit. Guides Nomi through it to reach Clarence.

COBB:
Leader of a Hells Angels chapter, full-patch, Oshawa chapter, 53 years old, controlling B and C blocks of Millhaven, a sealed maximum-security prison near Bath, Ontario.
Arrested six years before the novel on extortion and conspiracy charges tied to the March 2019 Steeles and Weston shooting (3 dead, 6 injured). an order the RCMP could never prove from outside, which is what put Clarence inside in the first place.
Built the facility’s entire post-Light social order: consolidated food stores, a watch rotation. Patient, analytical, and unusually honest about his own uncertainty; had placed Clarence in solitary confinement as a “controlled experiment” against the ~30%-likely possibility Clarence was undercover law enforcement, never resolving the question either way.

DEKE:
Cobbs subordinate/lieutenant inside the sealed prison near Bath, Ontario. Sensing Clarence was more generally competent than himself and a threat to his own standing, Deke bribes a guard, Ferris, $200, three weeks, to read Clarence’s incoming mail, then reports to Cobb only the observation, not a recommendation: “His wife writes like she’s being recorded”.
Tracks Nomi’s movements after her infiltration, discovers the ventilation system has been distributing infected east-end air through the whole facility for five months, and reports findings to Cobb, partially restoring his usefulness.

GAINES:
RCMP superintendent who recruits to go undercover inside Millhaven against Cobb’s Hells Angels chapter, eighteen months into Clarence’s OPP career.
Presents the case in a Nepean Tim Hortons: two burned assets already lost, a provable-only-from-inside order behind the March 2019 Steeles and Weston shooting, and a real, engineered murder conviction as Clarence’s cover.

PAULETTE:
Structural engineer, part of an “embryonic government network” that organised in Ottawa post-Light, the kind of specific expertise the network was deliberately built around.
Spends an afternoon with Nomi going through Millhaven‘s publicly available construction documentation: perimeter vulnerabilities, secondary access points, the engineering logic of a facility built to keep people in versus the reversed logic of getting in from outside.

Stéphane Roy is a lifelong reader and writer with a deep love for science fiction, apocalyptic worlds, and tightly constructed mysteries. This is his first novel. He lives in the Yukon with his dog and his aquarium, where long winters, silence, and wide, sometimes glowing, skies leave plenty of room for imagining the end of the world, and what might come after it. He is also waiting, with cautious optimism, for the aliens to finally reveal themselves and straighten us all out.
