A chronicle of St. John's, Newfoundland, January 23–March 14 after the Collapse, assembled from council minutes, a radio operator's log, and a notebook found on Signal Hill. The city falls without anyone having a name for the thing it is falling to. A woman on Gower Street notices her hair first. The council receives reports of a tiredness that sleep does not fix, a fog that sits wrong, vessels that do not arrive. A schoolteacher writes three words on a hill and never returns to it. The lighthouse at the edge of the continent keeps its appointment. The Atlantic receives it and sends nothing back.

Description:

A chronicle of St. John’s, Newfoundland, January 23–March 14 after the Collapse, assembled from council minutes, a radio operator’s log, and a notebook found on Signal Hill.

Reader's Review:

A strong chronicle of a city falling without knowing it's falling: the painted-houses motif threading through seven perspectives (Mun's hair, the council's reports, Wavey reading the street, the schoolteacher on Signal Hill) is well-managed, and Wavey's chapter ("the not-thinking took more of him than the weather did") and the lighthouse ending are quietly devastating.

Author Details:

STÉPHANE C. ROY

Stéphane Roy is a lifelong reader and writer with a deep love for science fiction, apocalyptic worlds, and tightly constructed mysteries. This is his first novel. He lives in the Yukon with his dog and his aquarium, where long winters, silence, and wide, sometimes glowing, skies leave plenty of room for imagining the end of the world, and what might come after it. He is also waiting, with cautious optimism, for the aliens to finally reveal themselves and straighten us all out.
