THE REFUSAL CREATURES

T

BOOK I: THE REFUSAL CREATURES

A monstrous grey creature with textured skin and sharp teeth crouches in a forest.

GREY MUTANTS

The Grey Mutants are human beings warped by prolonged exposure to the Hive pressure, industrial runoff, and the poisoned ecosystems spreading through the ruins of Montréal. Their skin takes on pale grey tones mottled with mineral growths, chemical burns, or fungal lesions, while their bodies adapt unevenly to the hostile environment around them. Some remain recognizably human beneath the damage; others move and behave in ways that feel increasingly detached from ordinary thought or emotion.

A muscular, stone-like humanoid creature with glowing green veins peeking from behind a tree in a dark, misty forest.

GLOWERS

The Glowers are pale, bioluminescent servants of the Hive who move through the Stadium and its tunnels with eerie synchronization, carrying the Pressure that forces thought, breath, and movement into alignment. Their fungal light pulses unevenly beneath translucent skin, and their presence alone can induce paralysis, seizures, panic, or submission in those exposed to the Field they project. They act less like soldiers than living extensions of the Hive itself: maintaining barricades, controlling prisoners, managing waste, and preserving order through psychic compression rather than open violence. Around them, individuality weakens, breathing synchronizes, and resistance begins to feel physically painful.

Several large, pale, worm-like creatures with gaping, toothy maws lurking in a dark, murky post-apocalyptic sewer tunnel.

PURGE GRUBS

They are not predators so much as processors of waste. They process the sludge from the Stadium Sewers and as such, are used as antagonists during the Ordeal of Gluttony.

A grotesque, mutated rat with visible tumors and bared teeth crouching in a dark, damp subway tunnel near a sign marked 22.

TUMOUR RATS

The rats living in the subway tunnel between Pie-IX and Joliette stations are covered in pus filled sac and purulent tumours.
They seem to be blind, aggressive if you get too close, but do not actively engage unless provoked. Their behaviour hint at a noticeable tendency towards energy conservation.
Their hunting strategy for big prey seems to be a wait and see attitude.

BICEPHAL2

BICEPHALIC RATS

The bicephal rats are enormous two-headed tunnel predators that infest the poisoned western subway arteries beneath the Stadium. Bloated by generations of chemical exposure and waste consumption, their bodies have grown into muscular masses of diseased flesh, pulsing tumors, and uneven fur slick with industrial runoff. Their twin heads move independently, blinking and scenting out of rhythm as they crowd the tunnels in dense packs, turning narrow passages into living walls of heat, breath, and hunger. They rarely attack with sudden violence. Instead, they wait for exhaustion, injury, or hesitation, feeding on whatever the Waste eventually claims.

A gaunt, emaciated humanoid creature with pale, textured skin and an open-mouthed expression stands in a dark tunnel.

TROGS

The Trogs are descendants of survivors who retreated into Montréal’s flooded subway depths and slowly adapted to a world defined by exhaustion, scarcity, and the constant threat of the Abyss below and the Hive above. Emaciated and eerily still, they live in stagnant stations half-submerged in chemically stratified water, conserving movement, sound, and energy with near-religious discipline because survival itself has become a matter of minimizing disturbance. Their society is not built on hope or expansion, but on equilibrium: quiet routines, metabolic restraint, and the belief that the safest way to endure the dying world is to stop struggling against it. To the Trogs, motion is debt, noise is danger, and ambition is a form of madness the surface world never outgrew.

A bioluminescent Acedian creature with a jellyfish-like top floats inside a dark, water-filled submerged concrete tunnel.

THE ACEDIAN

The Acedian is a massive jellyfish-like organism dwelling in the drowned tunnels beneath Beaudry, its translucent dome glowing faintly above a submerged forest of suspended bodies wrapped in drifting filaments. Slow, patient, and eerily gentle, it does not hunt through violence but through surrender, extending thin neural tendrils that pierce the body painlessly and flood the nervous system with warmth, relief, and profound emotional quiet. Fear dulls, urgency dissolves, and the instinct to survive gradually gives way to acceptance as the filaments weave themselves through muscle and nerve, guiding victims into the dark water below. To those exhausted by the wasteland, the Acedian offers something terrifyingly seductive: the permission to stop resisting.

A monstrous crawfish-like creature with tentacles and jagged teeth emerging from murky, dark water.

SUMP CRAWFISH

The Décarie crawfish are massive mutated crustaceans that thrive in the polluted floodwaters of the Sump, hauling themselves through the mud on heavy armored claws like creatures dragged out of a prehistoric swamp. Fed by chemical runoff, decay, and the endless debris of the drowned city, they grow to unnatural sizes with iron-hard shells and pale grey flesh gritty with mineral residue. Dangerous when cornered but valuable as food, they became one of the Sump’s primary resources, trapping survivors in the uneasy reality of depending on the wasteland’s mutations to survive.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stéphane Roy is a lifelong reader and writer with a deep love for science fiction, apocalyptic worlds, and tightly constructed mysteries. This is his first novel. He lives in the Yukon with his dog and his aquarium, where long winters, silence, and wide, sometimes glowing, skies leave plenty of room for imagining the end of the world, and what might come after it. He is also waiting, with cautious optimism, for the aliens to finally reveal themselves and straighten us all out.
