Incident Log ██████

Atmosphere is no longer a passive environment. It is classified as Active Environmental Infrastructure (AEI). Treat microclimates as hostile terrain with autonomous behavior. Engagement is environmental, not adversarial.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Survive contact. Map boundary. Withdraw intact.
SECONDARY: Data capture (thermal, pressure, particulate). No heroics. No endurance runs.
Standard Operative Kit — Minimum Loadout
  • Respirator (P3/P100 equivalent) + seal-check strip
  • Thermal optic or IR-capable camera
  • Barometric + humidity sensor (district-calibrated)
  • Non-conductive probe pole (1.8m) + rope extraction line
  • Grounding strap + triple redundancy clips
  • Hydration ration (double issuance in TH basins)
Rules of Contact
  • Boundaries kill. Casualties cluster at transition lines. Cross seams perpendicular.
  • Terrain has memory. Events recur along identical corridors. Assume recurrence.
  • Instrument failure is early warning. Treat sensor drift as pre-event signal.
  • Withdrawal is doctrine. Mapping outranks proximity. Do not “push through.”
Anomaly Engagement Cards (Excerpt)
AE-3-S • Oka Localized Wind Corridors
HIGH RISK

Rapid rotational gust corridor with debris acceleration and sudden vector shifts.

  • Directive: Do not outrun. Seek immediate horizontal shelter. Anchor to load-bearing structure.
  • Indicator: Lateral tree shear + sand hiss + pressure drop.
  • Extraction: Move only during post-rotation lull (60–120 sec).
PA-2-L • Red Ash Atmospheric Veil
SUSTAINED

High-altitude particulate layer compressing visibility and destabilizing sleep cycles.

  • Directive: Respirator ON. Visual confirmation every 30 sec. Avoid night travel.
  • Indicator: Noon-to-dusk light compression; static build on exposed metal.
  • Medical: Report cough onset within 4 hours.
HY-4-P • Cohesive Precipitation (“Water Sheets”)
FLASH FLOOD

Compressive rainfall mass. Planar descent. Immediate runoff and subsurface saturation.

  • Directive: Move to elevation above 3 m. Avoid drains and enclosed corridors.
  • Indicator: Acoustic dampening + rapid surface pooling.
  • Critical: Basements are fatal. Do not shelter underground.
EL-5-P • Glastorm Electrical Event
EXTREME

High-intensity discharge capable of instantaneous silica vitrification.

  • Directive: Ground all metal. Disperse personnel 15 m. Evacuate open terrain.
  • Indicator: Ozone spike; metallic resonance; hair-rise effect.
  • Aftermath: Glass fields retain heat up to 8 minutes.
Containment Policy

Full containment remains non-viable. Operational focus: perimeter mapping, civilian relocation, infrastructure reinforcement, and data acquisition. Causal mechanisms remain restricted under Directive ██████.

REMEMBER: This environment does not negotiate. It corrects. It isolates. It repeats.
Treat every corridor as if it has already happened there before.

A dystopian novel series set in post-nuclear Canada

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stéphane Roy is a lifelong reader and writer with a deep love for science fiction, apocalyptic worlds, and tightly constructed mysteries. This is his first novel. He lives in the Yukon with his dog and his aquarium, where long winters, silence, and wide, sometimes glowing, skies leave plenty of room for imagining the end of the world, and what might come after it. He is also waiting, with cautious optimism, for the aliens to finally reveal themselves and straighten us all out.
