The Last Islands: A post-apocalypse story set in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.

Marcel logs silence in a folder; Marguerite counts what she must save; Sandrine writes the truth into three notebooks and walks away. Layered, intimate, and quietly fierce, this is the story of decisions that reveal who people are when the world fails them.

Marcel Pelletier keeps lists. As préfet of a remote archipelago, he records every failed radio call and every rationed can of food, believing that authority and paperwork are enough to steady a town when the continent stops answering. But silence from Paris widens into an absence: ferries stop, generators are rationed, and neighbours begin to move across the strait to farms that can only hold so many.

On the other side of the sound, Marguerite Arsenault counts sheep and seeds and makes decisions that save some and shut the gate on others; her arithmetic is stark and merciless, and the farm becomes a crucible for the community’s ethics. As fog brings a strange blue-white light and a pattern of losses emerges, the islands’ leaders, elected, appointed, and self-appointed, must decide what they will protect and who they will turn away.

Sandrine, a nurse protecting the record, traces how silence, scarcity, and a strange light in the fog force impossible decisions.

Set against grey sea and a winter that refuses to relent, this is a novel about governance at the scale of a coastline: how rules falter under pressure, how people make hard arithmetic into mercy, and what we choose to save when the world beyond the horizon stops answering. St-Pierre and Miquelon have become the Last Islands.

A dystopian novel series set in post-nuclear Canada

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stéphane Roy is a lifelong reader and writer with a deep love for science fiction, apocalyptic worlds, and tightly constructed mysteries. This is his first novel. He lives in the Yukon with his dog and his aquarium, where long winters, silence, and wide, sometimes glowing, skies leave plenty of room for imagining the end of the world, and what might come after it. He is also waiting, with cautious optimism, for the aliens to finally reveal themselves and straighten us all out.
